Connecting Woodside Project Update

Welcome!

Over the last few months, the Connecting Woodside project team have been busy introducing the new 20mph speed limits, Next Bike hire points and measures to make junctions safer for all users. We’re pleased to say that we have now finished the first phase of this work.

20mph Zones

Despite having one of the lowest car ownership rates in Scotland the residential areas bounded by Garscube Road to the east, Maryhill Road to the west and New City Road to the south are dominated by traffic and vehicles. These changes are part of our work to make sure that these areas are a more pleasant and comfortable environment for residents and so that everyone feels safe and comfortable to make their daily journeys.

To do this, we have created a 20mph Speed Limit Zone. This means that the overall speed of road traffic is slowed, improving road safety for all users.

Reducing traffic speed helps people feel more confident about using their local streets. It is safer for children to walk to school, while elderly people feel more confident to travel independently and safely. By making it safer for people to make daily journeys to and from work, school and other sites around the city, more people will be encouraged to walk and cycle.

Next Bike Cycle Hire Scheme

As part of the Connecting Woodside Project, we have introduced 2 new Next Bike hire stations at Firhill Road and North Woodside Road.

Annual subscribers will be provided with an identification card which can be swiped over the cycle's on-board computer sensor to speed up the hire process. As many as four bikes can be hired on one card. Hire costs are displayed at docking stations and are also online.

Further information on this initiative can be found at the Next Bike Website.

Secure Cycle Parking

Glasgow City Council is currently performing a feasibility study on the introduction of secure covered cycle parking for residents of Glasgow.

The provision of these will help remove one of the major barriers to the uptake of cycling, namely the ability to conveniently and securely store a bike.

The consultation page for this is now available until Sunday 16th December.

In the first instance we are looking to provide facilities at 50 locations across the city. This will prioritise those areas of high household density which includes tower blocks, flats and tenement properties, which will aid the development of a programme of installation in areas that will benefit most from this initiative.

Should you wish to suggest locations that fall within the Connecting Woodside project area, please submit your request via our Commonplace Website or email sustainabletransport@glasgow.gov.uk

Car Club vehicles parking places

Glasgow City Council currently facilitates a Car Club, which can be a more cost effective alternative to owning a car, particularly a second car or if you only make occasional journeys. Sharing vehicles through a Car Club can help to reduce parking pressures across the city, promotes sustainable travel and can give people easier access to larger vehicles, such as vans, when they need them.

Further information on this initiative can be found at the Glasgow Car Club scheme provider's, Co Wheels, website .

Changes for junctions and loading

To help make junctions safer for all users, we have reduced the space available for parking near to a number of junctions. This means that people crossing the road and drivers emerging from the road will have better visibility of on-coming traffic, improving their safety.

We’ll be carrying on with work on all these measures through the rest of the year, before beginning construction on the next phase in Spring 2019, which take in the area generally bounded by Maryhill Road to the east, Woodlands Road to the west and New City Road to the south. We hope to be able to give you an update on the plans in early 2019.

Remember, you can see a full map of the Connecting Woodside project area, and add any comments for the project team to pick up, on our Commonplace website .
